Wayzata entered its final game of the season with the Lake Conference title already secured, leaving Saturday’s contest as a final tuneup between two longstanding rivals.

Sadra Golzarian scored the one goal in the game after 28 minutes. The forward and Skippers goalkeeper Michael Johnson collided in the box and Golzarian recovered first, firing the ball into the back of an unguarded net for the 1-0 victory and capping an unbeaten season at Wayzata High School.

“The first week of tryouts we started seeing the guys and it's like putting a puzzle together,” Trojans coach Dominic Duenas said. “The puzzle fit fairly easily so we knew we could put together something special and here we are at the end of the season (unbeaten) -- so far.”

The game was far from over for Wayzata, ranked second in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, as the seventh-ranked Skippers put continual pressure on the Trojans net.

Minnetonka kept trying to get the ball to the feet of leading scorer Avery Weaver in a scoring position, but Wayzata (11-0-3, 7-0-1) goalkeeper Colin Kubinski, in his first year as a starter, orchestrated his defense to great effect and kept the ball out of the back of the net.

Kubinski spent the past two years behind all-state goalkeeper Troy Louwagie, learning how to coordinate the his teammates as a defensive unit.

“I had (Louwagie) as a teacher the past two years and he really helped prepare me for this year,” Kubinski said. “Our team’s been playing unbelievable this year.”

Weaver landed two shots on net and the Skippers (11-4-1, 5-3-0) as a team were held to four shots that were all saved by Kubinski in the Trojans fourth shutout in five games.

Duenas told his team after the game that after this week all the success so far is wiped clean entering Class 2A, Section 6 playoffs.

“We’ve made a great run going undefeated and finishing in the Lake Conference undefeated but it’s a new chapter and we’ve got to get ready for sections,” Duenas said.

Before the game Kubinski, along teammates from the hockey and lacrosse teams, attended the funeral of Drake Shaver, a junior at Wayzata who committed suicide this past Sunday.

The entire Wayzata soccer team will be wearing Shaver’s initials and the No. 11 (his number in hockey and lacrosse) taped to the back of their cleats for the rest of the season.

“Wayzata’s such a family. Even though not everybody was there, everybody has been supportive and has Drake in mind,” Kubinski said.

First Report

Sadra Golzarian netted the game’s only goal at the 28-minute mark to boost Wayzata to a 1-0 win over Minnetonka and complete an unbeaten regular season Saturday evening at Wayzata High School.

Golzarian pursued a loose ball inside the box and was tangled with Skippers goalkeeper Michael Johnson before shaking loose and firing a shot to the left corner of the net.

Ranked second in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, the Trojans (13-0-3, 7-0-1) completed a sweep of the defending Lake Conference champions with the victory.

Colin Kubinski posted a four-save shutout while Johnson stopped three shots for Minnetonka (11-4-1, 5-3).
