Both Lakeville North and Eastview had their six-game winning streaks snapped on Tuesday.

The Panthers' streak ended in dramatic fashion with just two minutes left in overtime against defending Class 2A champion Eagan while Eastview fell 1-0 to Prior Lake.

Lakeville North eighth-grader Annie Waters gave up the game-winner in overtime to the Wildcats after relieving South Dakota State commit Taylor Lock in net after Lock been experienced some pain in her quad.

Waters bounced back by posting a seven save shutout against the Lightning Thursday night at Eastview High School.

“[Waters] came back and rebounded huge. She played awesome today,” Lakeville North coach Jeremiah Johnson said.

The middle school goalkeeper played more minutes Thursday than she has all season and has aged immensely in that span.

“At first I was kind of nervous because I thought [the team] would be like ‘Oh there’s this little eighth-grader coming in’ but they’ve took me under their arm,” Waters said.

Waters’ confidence showed with nine minutes left in regulation when a Lightning free-kick was headed towards the net and all 5-foot-4 of Waters leapt for the ball and punched it out of dangerous territory.

“We all got super pumped up for Annie,” senior Olivia Bruce said. “We all wanted to run [upfield] and make a play for her. We’re just super proud of her.”

“I think [Waters] stepped up big for her team -- I bet she was scared,” Lightning goalkeeper Claudia Pueschner added. “That’s a scary position and she played a good game. She had some big saves.”

Ranked No. 12 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, the Panthers (7-3-2, 4-1-1) knew Thursday’s game with fellow South Suburban Conference frontrunner Eastview would be physical, due to the fact that both clubs have members who play for Dakota Rev in the offseason.

With competitive spirit running high, the No. 10-2A Lightning wanted a win against their offseason allies, not only for bragging rights, but also to gain an edge in a tiebreaker scenario for the league crown.

“I think we played really hard -- it’s been a tough week for us -- but our girls gave a really good effort," Pueschner said. "Our defenders stepped up big time in a lot of moments.”

Eastview (6-3-2, 4-1-1) has been battling injuries and illness and struggled to field a full team at times throughout the game.

“I’m proud of the effort. It was platoon subbing for awhile trying to find people who weren’t hacking their lungs up,” Lightning coach David Herem said.

Johnson thought that even though the scoring highlights weren’t there for either team, the match resembled a high stakes matchup with how both teams battled through their bruises and adversity.

“It’s pretty representative of what a final four state tournament game would look like or a section final,” Johnson said.

“That’s what life’s all about you get knocked down you have to get back up and play,” Herem added.

Four teams in the South Suburban Conference have four wins entering the final stretch of the regular season. If the Panthers and Lightning win out they both will secure a share of the championship.
