Two and a half miles separates Minneapolis Washburn from Minneapolis Southwest, and with both schools drawing students from the city's southern-most neighborhoods, the inherent rivalry remains strong.

Southwest won a share of the Minneapolis City Conference title last season by splitting its two regular-season meetings with Washburn. However, the Millers got the last laugh, edging the Lakers 2-1 in the Class 2A, Section 6 championship and advancing to their first state tournament since 1989.

Both teams have had difficulty maintaining a consistent run of form this season, as Southwest's longest winning streak is three games while Washburn's is two.

The Millers have been more offensively potent this fall, scoring 28 goals compared to the Lakers' 15, although it should be noted that nearly half of Washburn's goals came in an 11-0 route of Wellstone International.

Southwest must maintain its generally solid defensive record to win and sweep the season series. The Lakers have allowed more than two goals only once and have two shutouts, including a 2-0 victory over the Millers on Sept. 1.

Washburn will be looking for revenge against a rival and leverage in section seeding in Thursday's rematch, making it our Top Game of the Week.
