The Panthers finished the season with 15 consecutive shutouts but came up short of the Class 2A state championship.

There are sports oddities and quirks, and then there is the Lakeville North girls’ soccer team. The Panthers finished the season with 15 consecutive shutouts but came up short of the Class 2A state championship. The Panthers lost to Eden Prairie in a shootout in the semifinals after playing to a scoreless draw. They blanked Mounds View 1-0 in the third-place game.

“A devastating way to end the season,” Panthers coach Jeremiah Johnson said. “I don’t think there is another team in MSHSL [Minnesota State High School League] soccer history that has finished the season with an active streak like that.’’

The Panthers (18-1-1) allowed only three goals all season. Their only setback was to state champion Eagan 2-1 on Sept. 10, the last time they were scored on during the season.

“Our girls played an extremely tough schedule,” Johnson said. “We played 11 teams that were ranked in the coaches poll at some point during the season.”

Johnson always will remember this year’s seniors, who played on the last day of the season in every year that the players were in high school.

“Our senior class has done something remarkable,” Johnson said.
