The Storm has gotten off to a fast start this season, thanks largely to the play of senior forward Maria Westerhaus.

In 2014, the Chanhassen girls’ soccer team scored just two goals in its first four games. The Storm has gotten off to a faster start this season, thanks largely to the play of senior forward Maria Westerhaus.

Westerhaus had a goal in a 2-0 victory over St. Peter, an assist in a 3-2 victory over Shakopee and both goals in a come-from-behind 2-2 tie with Prior Lake.

“In addition to her [scoring], Maria’s enthusiasm, effort and leadership have been a vital part of [our] 2-0-2 start to the season,” coach Joe Szorcsik said.

Hoeft on fast track

Hopkins senior Owen Hoeft, the No. 2-ranked cross-country runner in Class 2A, won the St. Olaf Showcase on Sept. 4. He bested a field of 653 boys to finished with a time of 16 minutes, 18.9 seconds, helping the Royals to the team championship.

Worth noting

• Minneapolis Southwest midfielder Mohamed Hassan helped the Lakers’ boys’ soccer team to a 3-1 start. He scored a goal in each game, including the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over rival Washburn in the battle for the Sylvester Cup.

• Minneapolis Henry quarterback Quentin Skinner has been a model of efficiency in the Patriots’ 3-0 start, completing 18 of 26 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns.

• The Cristo Rey boys’ soccer team began the season with six games in eight days, winning just twice, but sophomore striker Cruz Tellez stood out with six goals and three assists.
