Crimson (19-0) beat Mounds View 3-0

Maple Grove (19-0) returns to the Class 2A state boys’ soccer state tournament for the first time since 2011 after defeating Mounds View 3-0 in the Class 2A, Section 5 championship game Tuesday at Maple Grove.

Senior Daniel Cortez staked the No. 1 seed Crimson to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals less than 12 minutes into the first half.

Maple Grove, ranked No. 2 in the final coaches poll, held the two-goal advantage until senior Reid Diamond got the ball in a scrum after a corner kick and put it away. The Crimson's 3-0 lead with 15:22 to play ended any lingering hopes of a Mounds View comeback.

Tuesday’s victory capped a solid Maple Grove section tournament run. The Crimson outscored its three opponents by a combined score of 10-0. Maple Grove has allowed one goal allowed in past 12 games.

The No. 2 seed Mustangs (13-5-1), ranked No. 7 in the final coaches poll, allowed their first goals of the playoffs.
