Games are often defined by goals and who scores them, but tonight had much more to do with the effort it took to keep goals out of the net.

Both Jordan Metz of Centennial and Haley Mau of Andover came up big for their teams in the matchup between the two Northwest Suburban Conference foes in the Class 3A, Section 7 semifinal.

Metz shone a bit brighter, and she propelled Centennial to a 2-1 win after a penalty shootout, sending the Cougars (13-2-0, 9-2-0) to next week’s section final.

First Report

Centennial is on its way to the Class 3A, Section 7 final after defeating Andover in the semifinal after penalties.

The Cougars found the back of the net just over 15 minutes into the first half. Centennial won a free kick outside the left side of the penalty box. Addi Van Zee flung her leg in the air and got on the end of a dangerous ball and placed it into the side netting to put the Cougars up 1-0.

The Cougars followed that up with a shot from outside the box that hit the post.

Lauren Wright had the best chance of the first half for the Huskies, as a low cross slid to her alone eight yards away from goal. Her shot was saved by Jordan Metz to keep the game 1-0.

Metz and the Centennial backline halted Andover attacks for most of the second half. The Huskies eventually broke through when a Skylyn Jorgenson cross was headed home by Addie Dobratz with just under 15 minutes left in the game.

Haley Mau didn’t have to do much during regulation, but she made two big saves during extra time to keep her team’s season alive.

Metz was the hero is the penalty shootout, as she saved four of the five Andover penalties to secure the win.
