The kid can play indoors, too.

Eastview senior Mathew Gweh tallied 25 goals and eight assists through the Class 2A state quarterfinals playing on pitches from Apple Valley to Roseville. Under the repaired Metrodome roof on Tuesday, Gweh added a pair of goals to his impressive season in the Lightning’s 2-0 semifinal victory over Minneapolis Southwest.

Marked cleat-to-cleat by Lakers defenders all game, Gweh broke free for both goals – the second with 3:09 remaining – on feeds from sophomore Pierce Erickson.

“Everything I did, those scores were all his,” Gweh said. “His hard work, and we profited from it.”

The Lightning benefitted from strong defense, too, which was vital seeing as Southwest out-shot Eastview 17-8 for the game, and 14-4 in the second half.

Two of those shots came point-blank in the opening seconds of the second half. The Lakers then had a goal waved off because of offsides two minutes before Gweh put the game away.

“Probably the best team we’ve played offensively this year,” Lightning coach Scott Gustafson said. “They go six, seven deep at you and anybody that plays them is going to struggle if you have to face that for a full 80 minutes. We got on our heels, but that will happen against a team scratching for a goal.”

Goalkeeper Sam Ruelas held out the final 6:23 of the game because of a head injury. He is scheduled to meet with doctors Wednesday to determine if he is fit to play in Thursday’s championship game against Eden Prairie.
