WILLMAR — From the start, the Willmar Cardinals girls soccer team pinned the ball in the Glencoe-Silver Lake defensive half Thursday. Numerous rushes were stopped until Willmar senior Baylie Young connected on a rush down the left wing in the 24th minute to start a successful season opener as the Cardinals overwhelmed the Panthers 7-1 in a non-conference match.
Senior Courtney Jacobson soon followed with a 30-yard lift that skidded off the crossbar and skidded into the interior side of the net, giving Willmar a 2-0 lead in a span of three minutes. Young struck again to give Willmar a 3-0 lead at halftime.
