A goal by Hill-Murray defender Eric Burns in the 10th round of a shootout against Totino-Grace lifted the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory Friday in a Class 1A state quarterfinal soccer game.

The teams played a scoreless game through two halves and two overtime periods in which the Pioneers controlled much of the play at Chisago Lakes High School and held a 20-6 advantage in shots on goal.

In the shootout, each team took 10 shots. The final tally was 9-8 in favor of Hill-Murray (12-4-3).

“This was a huge game for us against a team that we know has talent on the field,” said Hill-Murray coach Matt Weingartz.

Totino-Grace (10-11-0) battled gamely in holding the Pioneers scoreless. Hill-Murray had multiple chances throughout the game but couldn’t connect.

“We know at this point in our season that everyone is good,’’ Weingartz said. “Records don’t matter and you have to play at the top your game.”

Weingartz said he felt great about the way his team played. “We got the job done, controlled play, and didn’t let them score on us,” he said.

The lengthy shootout had Hill-Murray answering each Totino-Grace goal. In the 10th round, the Eagles sent out freshman James Challou to take a penalty shot. Looked unfazed by the moment, he stepped up to take his shot but it hit off of the left post and out.

That left it to Burns to score the game-winner.

“That is why we have practices the shootout for the past few weeks,’’ Weingartz said. “We always know it can come down to that.”

Weingartz credited Totino-Grace and coach William Vance, saying, “It’s never going to be easy playing against a team coached by him, and they made sure tonight was a challenge for us.”

He also singled out Totino-Grace goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard, a 2012 all-state selection, who stopped multiple shots from inside the box and kept the Eagles in the shootout.

“He played an awesome game and we saw why he was all-state last season. He made some great plays tonight,’’ Weingartz said.”
