Stillwater at Minneapolis Washburn
2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23

We go from one Class 2A heavyweight bout to another as No. 1-2A Stillwater visits No. 4-2A Washburn, and if the season plays out consistently from this point -- which isn’t likely -- then Saturday's marquee slate could be a preview of the semifinals in the Class 2A state tournament.

Stillwater has held onto its top ranking all season, after posting a perfect record last year. The Ponies (8-0-1, 3-0-0) have won their seven games against Minnesota teams by a combined score of 25-6 (they have played two against Wisconsin teams). Stillwater's last loss was two years ago, when East Ridge defeated the Ponies in the 2A state semifinals. The Ponies used that game for motivation to win the state title last year.

Minneapolis Washburn is also unbeaten this season and has won six of its eight games. The Millers recorded draws against Edina (1-1 on Aug. 24) and Holy Angels (2-2 last Saturday). The Millers face No. 2-2A Wayzata on Monday, then Minneapolis Henry on Tuesday, before their matchup with Stillwater on Saturday.

This game features two of the most potent goal scorers in Minnesota. Washburn's Darley Florvil has 13 goals, which is tied for the fifth-most in the state, while Stillwater's Spencer Scott has 12 -- tied for 10th-best.
