Mounds View at Mahtomedi
7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 21

A battle between two east-metro strongholds takes place when Mounds View meets Mahtomedi on Thursday. The Mustangs and Zephyrs each own 12 trips to the state tournament.

Mounds View (9-0, 3-0) has been a model of consistency through the years, and this fall's undefeated start shouldn’t surprise anyone. With Boston University recruit Elle Conlin leading the defense, a the Mustangs have allowed just three goals, while the offense is powered by Emma Bangert and Clare Schooley, who have six goals each.

Mounds View begins a challenging stretch in its schedule with East Ridge on Sept. 19 and follows its matchup with Mahtomedi with games against No. 9-2A White Bear Lake and No. 10-2A Stillwater the following week.

The No. 5-1A Zephyrs (6-2-1, 2-0) rebounded after ending August with back-to-back 1-0 losses to White Bear Lake and East Ridge, with impressive performances against two Suburban East Conference foes. They edged Stillwater 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 5 and played to a 0-0 draw with Woodbury two days later.

Mahtomedi also defeated Cretin-Derham Hall 2-0 on Sept. 16 behind goals from Abby Schultz and Anna Wagner.

The Zephyrs beat the Mustangs 1-0 last season.
