Andover senior Alex Gutenberg tallied 24 goals this season and was held scoreless in just three games.

Even an alpha scorer needs help, however, and junior Logan Rohloff stepped up Wednesday in the Class 2A state soccer tournament quarterfinal against Moorhead at Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School.

Rohloff scored in the first half and Gutenberg struck in the second half to give Andover a 2-0 victory and stop Moorhead’s 14-game winning streak.

No. 4 seed Andover (15-2-2) advances to the semifinals at 8 a.m. Monday at U.S. Bank Stadium and plays No. 1 seed Stillwater (20-0). The game will be the first state tournament game ever played at the new $1.1 billion stadium.

With less than six minutes to go before halftime, Gutenberg sent the ball toward Rohloff, who turned and fired and beat goalkeeper Caden Triggs low and just inside the post.

Rohloff’s goal, his 10th of the season, gave Andover something to show for its advantage in scoring chances. He curled an earlier shot toward the goal that Triggs leapt to knock away. And Gutenberg just missed over the crossbar twice in the first half.

“He’s picked up his scoring later in the year,” Gutenberg said. “We need him to put balls in the net, and he managed to turn around and snipe one. That’s just what we needed to happen because we had so many early opportunities.”

Leading 1-0 at halftime, Andover braced for an inspired response from No. 5 seed Moorhead (16-3).

Gutenberg said game film of the Spuds’ section final victory showed a determined team. Yet Moorhead struggled to get into Andover’s side of the field, let alone to create scoring chances.

Moorhead coach Lance Hansen brought a second forward into the attack, and his team didn’t find its form playing a rarely used formation.

“We were trying to generate some more offense, but we weren’t particularly comfortable playing that system,” Hansen said.

Then Gutenberg made it 2-0 with a rocket of a shot from 20 yards out.

“I took a touch, saw the goal and thought about having one,” he said. “Luckily that one went in.”

From there, Andover got stingy. The Huskies pushed their winning streak to eight consecutive games, a span that includes seven shutouts.

“They came out really hard so we knew they would come at us,” Gutenberg said. “We knew we had to get a goal early and make sure we shut the game down quick and we managed to do that.”
