With the game tied 0-0 in the first half, Edina junior forward Matt Lindberg took a pass from teammate Roody Joinvil and scored on a twisting shot to the upper right corner of the net in the 22nd minute.

The goal came less than a minute after Burnsville (10-8-1) removed its senior goalie Tommy Lopez, who had started every game this season, due to injury.

His replacement, junior Jacob Connor, had no chance of stopping Lindberg’s sniper shot. Edina (16-3-1), the tournament's No. 3 seed, went on to a 3-0 victory to advance to the state semifinals.

The Hornets' duo of Joinvil to Lindberg struck again with less than 24 minutes left in the second half. Lindberg fielded Joinvil pass, split two Blaze defenders and scored again, this time going far left off the post.

“That is the goal you need in a tough soccer game like this,” Hornets coach Dave Jenson said. “Burnsville had a really good team and a tough section. They played really well.”

First report

Third-seeded Edina defeated Burnsville 3-0 on Tuesday in the Class 2A boys’ soccer state quarterfinals at Benilde-St. Margaret's School.

The Hornets (16-3-1) capitalized after a first half injury to Blaze senior goalie Tommy Lopez, who started every game for Burnsville (10-8-1) this year.

Edina scored on its second shot on backup goaltender Jacob Connor when junior Matt Lindberg beat him in the 22nd minute.

Lindberg scored again with under 24 minutes left in the second half and the two-goal lead was too much for Burnsville to overcome. Edina added a third goal later in the half.
