Orono at Benilde-St. Margaret's
7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 8

The top two teams in Class 1A face off in a rematch of last year’s Section 6 championship. Orono and Benilde-St. Margaret’s have met seven times in the section championship since 2007. The only time the two didn’t play in the section playoffs was in 2011.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s moved to Section 5 this season while Orono remained in Section 6. The No. 1 Red Knights have started the season 3-0-1 and beat No. 8-1A Blake 2-0 last week.

Sophie Roux (2 goals, 6 assists), Amanda Cassidy (2 goals) and Madison Stoks (2 goals) are the leading scorers for Benilde-St. Margaret’s, which also has first-team all-state midfielder Aleksa Tataryn.

The No. 2 Spartans (3-1-0) have a 5-2 win over No. 10-1A DeLaSalle on their resume. The lone setback for Orono, the defending Class 1A champion, was a 2-0 defeat to Minneapolis Washburn in a rematch of last year’s Class 1A state championship.

The Spartans have adjusted to life without standout Sophie Babo, who won the Class 1A Ms. Soccer award last season after finishing with 32 goals.

Claire Bash had a goal in a 2-0 win at Rochester Lourdes on Sept. 4.

Carly Goehring, a second team all-state selection last season, has kept the Orono attack potent. The Butler University commit had two goals and an assist against the Islanders and a goal in an 8-0 win over Watertown-Mayor.
