Mahtomedi, an 11-time state tournament participant and a six-time Class 1A champion, is coming off a 14-3-2 season that ended with a 2-1 overtime loss to Cretin-Derham Hall in the Section 4 championship.

The No. 4-1A Zephyrs have rolled to a 3-0 start and are led offensively by a trio of seniors. Michelle Austin has two goals while Karleen Yapello and Becca Murphy each have one.

Mounds View has benefited from a powerful offensive attack in its first four games. The No. 5-2A Mustangs (3-0-1) cruised to an 8-2 victory over Champlin Park and a 10-0 win at Irondale. They also tied No. 8-2A Burnsville 1-1.

Rachel Boyer leads Mounds View with 10 goals. Mariah Northrop has five goals and Emma Bangert has four. Julia Anderson, Clare Schooley and Lauren Wikstrom have two goals apiece.

The Mustangs, who finished with a 12-4-3 record, lost to Centennial 2-0 in last year’s Section 5 title game but now face a new path to the state tournament this season after moving to Section 4.

Mounds View has reached the state tournament 11 times, including four consecutive years (2005-08). The Mustangs also appeared at state in 2010 and 2013.

Mounds View picked up a 4-3 road victory over Mahtomedi last season.
