It may have been 85 degrees and achingly humid during Edina’s 2-0 win over Prior Lake on Tuesday, but Hornets coach Dave Jenson said his players deal with worse conditions during practice.

“Our training sessions are harder than our games,” Jenson said matter-of-factly.

Those training sessions must be resonating with Jenson’s team because Edina (and the heat) suffocated Prior Lake at every turn.

The Hornets outshot the Lakers 18-4, and the score could have been much worse if not for several timely saves by Prior Lake goalkeeper Ethan Derks.

Matt Lindberg scored both goals for Edina, ranked No. 9 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, and the forward said that the No. 8-2A Lakers were unable to respond to the Hornets’ attack.

“We played fast, quick, and they couldn’t handle us,” Lindberg said after the game.

A sophomore who spent time last season on the varsity, Lindberg has already developed a knack for disrupting opposing defenses.

“Matt’s a handful (to guard),” Jenson said. “He’s very fast and he’s very clever.”

Junior midfielder Roody Joinvil assisted on Lindberg’s second goal and also proved to be a handful for the Prior Lake defense.

“They’ve done a little bit of work in the summer together,” Jenson said of Lindberg and Joinvil’s connection on the field. “Their chemistry is starting to come out now.”

Joinvil, a newcomer to the varsity team, said that his timing with Lindberg could be key in keeping the Hornets from losing.

“I know when to get him the ball to score,” Joinvil said.

That work in the summer may have stoked the competitive flames for Lindberg and Joinvil, who both play an aggressive and physical style.

“I can’t tie or lose,” Lindberg explained. “I don’t like it one bit.”

First Report

Sophomore forward Matt Lindberg scored twice to lead Edina past Prior Lake 2-0 in Tuesday night’s game at Kuhlman Stadium in Edina.

Lindberg netted his first in the 23rd minute while the second came in the 53rd minute, and both came off slick passing plays. Junior midfielder Roody Joinvil earned the assist on the second goal.

The loss spoils the season opener for Prior Lake, ranked No. 9 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll.

The win moves No. 8-2A Edina to 2-0 after defeating No. 5-1A Breck 4-1 on Aug. 29.
