Benilde-St. Margaret’s is coming off an impressive season which culminated with a trip to the Class 1A, Section 6 championship game against Orono. The Red Knights, who finished with 14-4-1 record, played even with the Spartans through two overtimes before losing 2-1 (5-4 on penalty kicks) in a shootout to the eventual state champion.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s, which graduated nine seniors, finds itself behind Orono once again, opening the year ranked No. 2 while the Spartans are No. 1 in the Class 1A preseason poll.

Hopkins begins the season just outside the Class 2A top-10 rankings, but could move up with a victory over Benilde-St. Margret's, a team the Royals defeated 1-0 in their only meeting last season.

Hopkins' success last year didn't end there, as it captured the Class 2A, Section 6 title with a 2-1 overtime win over Wayzata.

The Royals finished with a 12-6-2 record after a 3-0 state quarterfinal loss to eventual state champion Eagan.
