With their star player injured, Jessica Woessner and her Orono teammates stepped up.

After regulation and two sudden-death overtimes ended scoreless, No. 2-seeded Orono won its second state championship in six years with a 3-2 shootout victory over No. 1-seeded and previously undefeated Minneapolis Washburn.

Claire Bash scored the Spartans' third goal on penalty kicks before Woessner made the game-winning save of an attempt by Washburn’s Anna Polacek.

“Penalty kicks are something that I have worked really hard on for a really long time,” said Woesnner, a junior who made six saves in the game for the shutout. “There’s a lot of different things you have to watch. I was very confident.”

Orono (19-2-1) played much of the second half without senior Sophie Babo, Minnesota’s Ms. Soccer in Class 1A. With 25 minutes, 25 seconds left in regulation, the Kentucky recruit -- who rejoined the team this season after playing club soccer last year -- suffered a leg injury making a slide tackle. After a 15-minute delay, Babo was carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance with what was later described as a dislocated ankle and leg fracture.

“[Sophie] really wanted it,” Orono coach Erin Murray said. “Every girl knew that. They really did it for Sophie.”

For Orono, Woessner and Carly Goehring also scored in the shootout, handing Washburn its first loss of the year. The Millers (20-1), who came into the game with 17 consecutive shutouts, got shootout goals from Morgan Cottew and Emma Stotts.

Orono also won a shootout against Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the Section 6 championship  game.

“Our club did a really, really good job of rallying after Sophie got hurt,” Woessner said. “We knew it would be harder without her, but we also knew we had to do it for her — and we did. It feels so good.”

Both teams had good opportunities to score throughout regulation and overtime. But both goalkeepers -- Taylor Cottew of Minneapolis Washburn and Woessner -- each made a handful of great saves.

The defensive battle was expected by many. Washburn allowed just two goals all season en route to its shutout streak since August. Orono allowed just 13 goals on the year and had 13 shutouts.

Minneapolis Washburn, which won the state tittle in 1981, was making its 11th state tournament appearance. Orono was making its seventh trip to state.

First report

Orono won its first state championship since 2009 in a 3-2 shootout victory Thursday over No. 1-ranked and previously undefeated Minneapolis Washburn.

The game was scoreless through regulation and overtime. Leading 3-2 in the shootout, Jessica Woessner made the save off the foot of Washburn's Anna Polacek to secure the victory at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud.

Claire Bash, goalie Woessner and Carly Goehring scored for Orono in the shootout.

Orono also won a shootout over Benilde-St. Margaret's to win the Section 6A championship and earn a trip to state.

Orono played most of the second half without senior Sophie Babo, the Ms. Soccer in Class 1A. With 25:25 left in the half, Babo, a University of Kentucky recruit, suffered a leg injury at midfield making a slide tackle she drew a yellow card for. After a 15-minute delay, Babo was carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance.
