Peter Rundquist showed he can use any or all parts of his foot to score.

The sophomore forward used the tip of his toe to flick in the first of his two goals and help Edina top Benilde-St. Margaret’s 4-0 Monday night at the Edina Community Center.

Rundquist knows skill had little to do with his first score.

The sophomore forward was in the center of the penalty box when he found himself on the receiving end of a long throw-in from the right sideline. Rundquist stuck out his foot and tipped the ball by the Red Knight’s goalkeeper, tucking it into the right side of the goal.

“[It was] really lucky,” he said. “But it felt just as good as any other goal.”

Luck had little to do with Rundquist’s second goal. He curved a 20-yard free kick around a wall of Benilde-St. Margaret’s defenders and placed the ball perfectly in the left side of the net as the Red Knights’ goalkeeper watched it sail past.

Hornets’ assistant coach Bill Garner said he was pleased to see Rundquist finally score a goal after working so hard in practice to improve his offensive game.

“He’s been playing really well for us,” Garner said. “(It was) nice to see him finally net on that one.”

Rundquist, however, was not as happy with his play.

"I don’t think I controlled the midfield as well, but the scoring made me more confident, made the team more confident,” he said. “I hope I made the team happy.”

Garner knows the goals helped build Edina's confidence, especially on defense as the Hornets held Benilde-St. Margaret’s, the No. 6 team in the Minnesota High School Soccer Coaching Association’s Class 1A rankings, scoreless for the third time this season.

Edina recorded only its third victory of the season despite playing well in its previous five games. The Hornets tied No. 6-2A Hopkins and No. 5 Wayzata while losing by one goal to top-ranked Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. They also defeated Blake.

Senior midfielder Matt Dahl, who scored against the Red Knights, said the Hornets were excited they finally got a win.

Dahl also said Rundquist is showing the type of talent that had the sophomore pushing for varsity playing time last season.

“He was a big candidate last year, and he proved (tonight) that he really deserves to be on varsity,” Dahl said.
