Minnetonka has made scoring goals seem easy.

The Skippers have 36 goals in their first seven games including 11 from the team's leading scorer, Suad Suljic.

Suljic and Minnetonka, ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaching Association's poll, found keeping up that clip was a bit more difficult as they faced a familiar foe in No. 7 Edina.

Suljic, however, couldn't be denied as the junior forward scored with 4:24 remaining in overtime, giving the Skippers (8-0-0) a 2-1 victory over Edina (2-3-3) on Tuesday at Minnetonka High School.

Suljic's score came off a throw-in he controlled inside the box before burying a shot past Hornets' senior goalkeeper Tanner Morrison.

Suljic, who ranks third in the state in goal scoring, atoned for a first-half penalty kick he sent high over the crossbar by scoring the OT winner. The goal gave Minnetonka its first victory over Edina since Oct. 6, 2011 when the Skippers won 2-1 in the regular-season finale.

"It was amazing to get this one and to finally beat these guys," Suljic said.

The Hornets also defeated the Skippers 2-1 in the 2013 Section 2AA semifinals.

"I remember how we felt walking off the field last year in sections, losing to them," Minnetonka head coach Mike Rogers said. "When the schedules came out and we looked at them, this was one that we wanted really bad and I am glad we played a great game."

Minnetonka needed a great game as Edina seemed to have some early momentum.

Following Suljic's missed penalty kick, the Hornets marched down the field and took a 1-0 lead when senior defender Andrew Gresham scored after taking a perfect pass from freshman Matt Lindbergh.

Looking to even the score, Minnetonka turned up the offensive pressure in the second half but the Skippers couldn't capitalize and the stress started building.

"You get a little frustrated when you aren't scoring and putting that much pressure on them," Suljic said. "We just had to keep going though, because we know we have a talented team that can get the big goal."

Adam Reiskytl provided the pressure relief. Minnetonka's senior captain headed the ball into the goal off Suljic's corner kick to even the game 1-1.

"It was a perfect ball that he sent me," Reiskytl said. "It was right there and I just had to get a piece of it."

Minnetonka, however, keep up its offensive push, controlling the pace in overtime and finishing with a majority of the scoring chances.

"We just had to be more creative," Reiskytl said. "You can't expect things to work by doing the same thing over and over again that didn't work before."

Edina pushed in the closing minutes of overtime and came close to getting a great scoring chance when Minnetonka nearly committed a foul in the penalty box. The referee allowed play to continue, causing Rogers' to almost feel that sting again.

"I was looking for the AD (athletic director) or someone to come revive me if they got a penalty shot," he said.
